The number of unemployed people is growing in Russia

The pandemic is not the cause, but a consequence

The number of applicants for benefits increased by 44,000 people and reached 735,000 people. In total, experts predict a possible increase in unemployment up to 4 million. Earlier, Alexei Kudrin, Chairman of the Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation, said about a possible increase to 8 million.

Unemployment in Russia can go up to 8 or even 15 million. The thing is that today, like a year earlier, official unemployment numbers are counted precisely according to the number of citizens who have applied for benefits. However, as a rule, only some people apply for benefits.

In fact, everything will depend on the lockdown and quarantine duration in the country. Everyone understands that workers suffer first — it is shops, hotels, public catering facilities, and the service sector. There are nearly 15 million people involved in this employment struggle now. Moreover, industrial workers may also be laid off or has already been, not to even mention those who lost a lot in wages.

It must be understood that the cause of unemployment is capitalism and its regular economic crises. Coronavirus only exacerbated the problem. However, the crisis and epidemic will end, and workers will need to draw conclusions about who the government protects in the first place, and who will ultimately be less affected by the danger — capitalists who isolated themselves in their suburban «palaces», or working people who are forced to keep going to work.
